About Us

Hey there! My name is Mark Oberg, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Addictions Counselor in the State of Colorado, founder and lead psychotherapist with Sanitas Counseling.

Mark-Oberg

I grew up in the north woods of Minnesota, specifically in a city situated at the tip of Lake Superior named Duluth. It is a beautiful place with an Ariel Lift Bridge where some famous people were born and raised. I strongly suggest checking it out sometime in the spring, summer or fall, but steer clear in the winter; it gets really cold.

After graduating from the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a degree in Psychology, I worked as an Americorps VISTA worker in the Duluth Public Schools for a couple of years training teachers in Service Learning. After that, I moved to Minneapolis and worked for a non-profit organization that helps individuals diagnosed primarily with schizophrenia and major depression get back on their feet. Both of these were amazing experiences where I had the opportunity to work with a bunch of really inspiring, dedicated folks.

In 2008, I decided to go back to school and entered Naropa University’s Contemplative Psychotherapy program.

During my time as a graduate student at Naropa, I worked in a transitional living facility for teens suffering from primarily addiction issues, had a practicum placement at a transitional living facility for dually-diagnosed patients, as well as did a 700-hour clinical internship with Boulder County’s Addiction Recovery Center. I was also a Graduate Assistant for Alcohol and other Drug Coordination at Naropa for two years.

I graduated from Naropa in the Spring of 2011.

All of these experiences and many more have shaped my outlook to therapy and what it means to recover; not just from addiction or trauma, but also from living in a world that may not make much sense to you. I would like to help it make sense. I would like to help you to recognize that, while there is suffering in life, it need not be an enemy to be avoided at all costs. In time, together we may come to accept that suffering in all of its (often times excruciating) forms may be worked with through genuine connection with another compassionate human being. Together, through a greater awareness of the patterns that we have developed throughout our lives, those things that we choose to move towards, those that we move away from, and others that we ignore, we might create a mutual understanding of how you can live your life in the present moment, no longer paralyzed by the disappointments of the past or obsessions with some idealized future.

In short, I work with people to recover their own sense of wholeness and sanity.

There’s a lot more to this story (certainly to your story), but for now, please head over to the Contact page to set up an initial consultation.
